Whale Watching (July-Sept)
The Whitsunday region is the breeding ground for the magnificant Humpback Whale. Experience the thrill of coming face to face with these majestic creatures on their annual migration to warm Whitsunday waters. From July to early September, these gentle giants visit the area to raise their new-born calves.


The Whitsunday coast starts from Mackay in the south and continuing north until Bowen and the Mt Aberdeen National Park. It shares the same latitude with Hawaii , and enjoys a similar climate.
The Whitsundays enjoy a warm, tropical climate all year round with the occasional tropical shower from December through February. Average annual temperatures range from 21C to 27C. Today the words Whitsunday and the Whitsunday Islands encompass the large 'town' of Whitsunday, which includes Airlie Beach, Cannonvale, Shute Harbour and Proserpine and spreads south to Laguna Quays Resort and north to Bowen.

The Whitsundays boasts 74 tropical islands off the Central Queensland coast. Of the most well known are Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and the uninhabited islands are all controlled by National Parks and Wildlife. It is necessary to obtain camping permits from the National Parks Office if you are intending to stay the night.

Getting To The Whitsundays

By Air: International access to the Whitsundays is available via connecting flights to Sydney , Melbourne , Brisbane or Cairns International Airports . Regular direct and connecting domestic flights fly into both Whitsunday Coast ( Proserpine ) airport on the mainland and Hamilton Island airport. Qantas, Virgin Blue and Jetstar service the region

By Rail: Queensland Rail operates regular services into Proserpine from most major cities in Australia . The Sunlander and Tilt Trains can help you discover a host of coastal destinations and attractions including the Great Barrier Reef and Whitsunday Islands

By Bus: Coach companies offer regular services between major cities and to The Whitsundays. For public transport around the Whitsundays, Whitsunday Transit is the mainlands major passenger transport service

By Road: If you choose to drive to The Whitsundays the roads are in excellent condition with some beautiful scenery along the way. The highway to Proserpine and the road into Airlie Beach and Shute Harbour are suitable for all vehicles.
